The Clinical Study of 11 Cases of Wikie¢¥s Syndrome

Abstract
During the past two and one half years, from March, 1969, to September, 1971, we have encou
ntered 11 cases of Wikie¢¥s syndrime, which were treated and diagnostically certified by operation at
Presbyterian Medical Center in JeonJu.
An analysis of our data reveals the following:
1) Among the 5,750 upper gastrointestinal studies during the above-mentioned period, 11 cases
were found, a percentage of about 0.2%.
2) The peak age incidence was 21¡30 years and range was from 17 years to 49 years.
3) The sex distribution was more in male than female, and the ratio was 7 to 4.
4) The predominant symptoms were epigastric pain(100%), indigestion(72.7%), epigastric fullness
(54.5%) and vomiting(45.4%). Weight loss was the most important physical finding, occurring in
90.9% of our patients. The next most frequent sign was epigastric tenderness(63.6%).
5) The following concomitant diseases were diagnosed: Visceriptosis: 3 cases(27.3%); Duodenal
ulcer: 2cases(18.2%); Cholecystitis 1 cases with duodenal ulcer, Pancreatitis 1 cases; Hyperthyroidism
1 cases; Salmonellosis 1 cases; and Pyloric stenosis 1 case.
6) The average duration of preoperative symptoms and signs was about 5 years and the range was
from 4 months to 15 years.
7) As to treatment, duodenojejunostomy was the principle in all cases. Even when a duodenal ulcer
was present concomitantly, we added duodenojejunostomy simultaneously. No operative mortality or
complication occurred.
8) The average eight loss was 10.5§¸, or about 17% of body weight. The most significant loss
was recorded 17§¸, or 32.7% of body weight.
9) Satisfactorily follow-up study was almost completely done. Six patients are symptom-free and
two patients state that marked improvement occurred. The average weight gain was 5.7§¸(13.4%),
and the best increase was 10§¸.
